CHAPTER TWO

AND THEN HE was running, helter-skelter, legs pumping like pistons, his chest gasping for breath, a taste like blood in his mouth, yet dry and arid like a desert baked red. And no matter how hard he ran, the hunter was always faster, closing in on him with every step he took.

Bullets and grenades began to explode in the air around him, forcing the runner to redouble his efforts, but like some nightmare, the ground seemed to swallow up his energy, sapping it straight from his legs, until he seemed to be running on the spot. Behind him the terrible rasping breath of his chaser wheezed ever louder behind him, until he could feel it upon his· neck. But still he did not dare look around, afraid of what manner of monster could be chasing him . . .

Then he was sprawling, sure a brutal shove in the small of the back had undone him. Limbs sprawled outwards, face thudded into blood-soaked soil, the smell hot, musky, all too human. Sweat soaked his body, urine trickled down his legs, curling and clinging. A boot thudded into his side, kicking his torso over and the sun blazed down into his eyes, dazzling, blinding.

And a figure bent over, leering over him, blocking out the blazing sunshine, replacing it once again with that vicious visage, all teeth and leering grin, a dribble of fetid slime hanging from the stubble-encased chin, evil eyes hidden behind a flashing visor. The figure leaned forward, closer still, until its face was just inches from him, almost touching, like a lover seeking a kiss, but this kiss was deadly, he knew that, had always known it. Now it was truer than ever.

The leering, jackal-faced pursuer pulled a weapon from its side, a hand-gun of some sort, and thrust it upwards against the underside of his jaw.

'Time to die, creep!' grinned the figure, pulling back the trigger on its weapon.

The hunted, the victim turned his head slightly and caught sight of a thin slice of metal welded to his killer's chest. A single word was emblazoned upon it: DREDD. The victim screwed up his eyes desperately as his murderer repeated the final message, pulling back the trigger, the bullet rushing forward in the chamber, just a moment away from tearing into his jawline, ripping through the mouth and upwards, exploding inside the brain.

'Time to die, creep!'
